What to Expect When Dress Shopping

Shopping for a wedding gown is something us girls have dreamed of, however we sometimes have no idea what to expect when shopping, and we’re not sure what the process looks like. Here are some answers to the questions you might be having.

When should I start dress shopping?

We always recommend start the shopping process about 8-10 months before your wedding date. If you are having a destination wedding, then you would want to start looking 8-10 months before the day you leave. This gives you plenty of time to order a new dress and have time for alterations. Feel free to start shopping even earlier than that!

What should I try on?

If you have not tried on dresses yet, let your consultant know so they can pull dresses in different silhouettes and styles. This allows you to see what kind of look you’re going for and help narrow down the search. You never know until you try it on! It’s kind of like trying new foods, you never know you like something unless you have tasted it.

I said “YES!”

Congrats on saying “yes” to the dress! Now what? Now we wait, this is why we recommend on shopping early. Once you purchase the gown, the designer will make you a new gown. This can take up to 6 months (depending on the designer). Once the gown has arrived at the shop, you will come in and pick up the dress and take it to alterations, which will take another 2 months (3 fittings).

Get Married Check, Whats Next?

After the all the celebrating from the big day to relaxing on the honeymoon, you get to go home and enjoy this new chapter with your spouse. However after all is said and done there are a few more things to check off the to do list.

Preserve your wedding gown! This is fairly easy to do, all you need to do is send it away. Don’t worry it will come back! Preserving your gown will give you a peace of mind knowing that you don’t have to worry about it changing color over time or lace and beads falling off. They make your gown looking brand new even after 25 years later. If you have any questions regarding Wedding Gown Preservation feel free to call us at (858) 523-9254 and we are happy to answer to them.

Change your last name! This is definitely the longest process to do, and would recommend to start this as early as possible. We all know the DMV is not the funnest place to be, so its better to get this done sooner than later.

Thank yous! In the process of changing your name, you can start writing your thank you cards to your guests. Remember to write down what each person got you and your spouse when you open your gifts.

Color? Don’t know her

Neutrals are all the rage right now, and we don’t see them leaving anytime soon. Recently, couples have been ditching the bold color schemes and sticking with creams, blushes and grays for a more elegant but modern look.

Fun Planning Tips!

Planning your big day should be more fun and less stress, here are some helpful tips to keep the excitement in planning.

  • Treat your tastings as date days! This is a fun way for you and your fiance to sit down and enjoy a meal together without the crowds and noisy restaurants, whether it be a cake tasting or caterer its a great way to enjoy each other.

  • Registry! It’s like shopping but with out spending money! Don’t be afraid to put too much on it, most wedding guests will purchase more than one gift, its good to have 2 gifts for each guest. So if you have 150 guests, 300 items is plenty. So you put that whole china set on that list girl!

  • Preparation is key! This goes with out saying, but having a printed itinerary is very helpful for everyone in the party. The week of is when things get kicked into high gear, so keeping your bridesmaids and groomsmen in the loop and knowing what time and where they need to be will help take the stress off of you.

  • Be open! The majority of the time your guests are not going to notice the little mistakes. So if you notice something is off, don’t worry no one is going to see it, just keep dancing! If it truly bothers you, let your day of coordinator know.
